Whenever I Go Out to Walk
Whenever I go out to walk,
All the geese begin to gawk;
And when I start to wander back,
All the ducks begin to quack.

First published in The Peter Patter Book of Nursery Rhymes (1918).
You have to laugh at how geese and ducks act like the neighborhood watch. One step outside, and suddenly you’ve got a chorus of complaints following you down the lane. You can almost hear the chatter: “Who’s that now?” “What’s she carrying?” “Quack! Follow her!”
It’s a gentle picture of country life, where even a short walk turns into an event. The rhyme feels both cozy and alive, reminding us that sometimes the world pays far more attention to us than we think — especially if that world happens to have feathers.
